Major Record Labels Propose Rules to Block AI Music From Charts
Universal Music Group, Sony Music, and Warner Music Group have proposed new rules that would prevent AI-generated songs from qualifying for international music charts.
The world's largest record labels, including Universal Music Group, Sony Music, and Warner Music Group, have put forth a proposal to restrict AI-generated music from appearing on international music charts.
The proposal aims to prevent what is described as "AI slop" from reaching chart status. Under the proposed rules, songs would require significant human input to be eligible for charting.
This initiative goes beyond previous labeling proposals from organizations like the RIAA, IFPI, and SAG-AFTRA, which focused on standardized labeling for AI-generated or AI-assisted music.
The new rules would mandate clear labeling for such tracks but would also disqualify them from charts unless they meet specific criteria emphasizing substantial human contribution to their creation.
