Major Tech Firms Commit Over $3 Trillion to AI Infrastructure

Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and Oracle have outlined multi-year capital expenditure plans for data centers and AI hardware.

31 October 2026

Five major technology companies have pledged to invest more than $3 trillion into AI infrastructure, including data centers, energy procurement, and specialized hardware. These commitments vary in scope and timeframe, with some covering immediate construction projects and others involving long-term supply contracts spanning decades.

Alphabet leads the group in disclosed commitments, reporting over $1 trillion in total contracts, a significant increase from the previous year. Meta has also accelerated its spending, projecting over $800 billion in future outlays, with nearly half dedicated to long-term data center lease obligations. According to Meta CFO Susan Li, these investments are essential to support the company's core operations and ongoing AI development.

Market analysts remain divided on the long-term returns of these heavy capital expenditures. The aggressive spending has shifted free cash flow for several firms from positive to negative. Oracle, which was the first of the major players to report negative free cash flow due to these projects, expects to return to profitability by 2028 by utilizing vendor financing and customer prepayments to mitigate upfront costs.
