Malaysia Airlines is set to join the oneworld airline alliance following a unanimous vote by the chief executives of current member airlines. The decision was reached during the IATA World Air Transport Summit in Singapore.

Upon joining, Malaysia Airlines will integrate into an alliance network serving nearly 950 destinations across 150 countries. The carrier is expected to begin operations as a full member by late 2012. In the interim, the airline will focus on expanding bilateral agreements with existing oneworld partners to prepare for full systemic integration, with Qantas acting as the sponsoring airline for the entry process.

For passengers, the move will allow members of the Malaysia Airlines Enrich frequent flyer program to earn and redeem rewards across the entire oneworld network. Similarly, members of other oneworld airlines will gain benefits when traveling on Malaysia Airlines flights. The alliance states the move is designed to strengthen its presence in the Asia-Pacific region, which remains a high-growth market for international air travel.

Company leadership cited the need to align with a global group to remain competitive in an increasingly alliance-driven aviation industry. The addition aims to complement oneworld's existing coverage while expanding service options for both Malaysia Airlines and the wider alliance customer base.
