Malaysia Designates Penang as Fintech Hub

Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced on October 9 that Penang has been designated as the nation's financial technology (fintech) hub as part of Budget 2027. To support this designation, Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund Khazanah and the state's investment promotion agency InvestPenang will establish a 100 million ringgit (approximately US$24.5 million) Strategic Investment Fund.

The fund is intended to support early-stage semiconductor and advanced manufacturing companies. Penang is already recognized as the "Silicon Valley of the East" and a global hub for electronics and semiconductors. The government's initiatives aim to further solidify the region's position in the technology sector.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that the federal government has brokered a 40-year bulk water supply agreement between the Perak and Penang state governments. This agreement is significant as it could secure large volumes of water necessary for water-intensive industries such as chipmaking and advanced manufacturing.

The designation and associated investments reflect Malaysia's commitment to advancing its digital economy and attracting international investment in high-tech sectors. Penang's established industrial infrastructure provides a strong foundation for the growth of its fintech ecosystem.
