Malaysia will leverage Chinese satellite technology to bolster its early warning system for floods, a recurring issue during the nation's monsoon season. Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stated that the satellite-based system is expected to provide more precise and comprehensive weather forecasts, aiding authorities in disaster preparedness and mitigation efforts.

The initiative addresses the challenges posed by the annual northeast monsoon, typically lasting from November to March. This period frequently experiences heavy rainfall, leading to sudden floods and landslides. The severe floods in December 2021, which resulted in over 50 fatalities and displaced approximately 400,000 people, highlighted the critical need for improved disaster management capabilities.

Mr. Hamidi, who also chairs Malaysia's National Central Disaster Management Committee, is scheduled to discuss the expedited implementation of this satellite warning system with China's Minister of Public Security, Wang Xiaohong. The aim is to integrate the advanced technology swiftly into Malaysia's disaster response infrastructure.

The 2021 flood event caused significant economic damage, estimated at RM 6.1 billion (approximately USD 1.3 billion), affecting numerous homes, factories, businesses, and infrastructure. The highly industrialized state of Selangor was among the most severely impacted regions.
