Malteser in Germany Sells St. Hildegardis Hospital to Stiftung der Cellitinnen
Malteser Deutschland is transferring ownership of its St. Hildegardis acute care hospital in Cologne to Stiftung der Cellitinnen. The sale is part of a broader strategy by Malteser Germany.
Cologne, Germany – Malteser Deutschland has finalized an agreement to sell its St. Hildegardis acute care hospital in Cologne to the Stiftung der Cellitinnen foundation. The transaction is subject to standard regulatory approvals.
The St. Hildegardis hospital, with 233 beds and approximately 400 staff, will transition to the ownership of the foundation, which is a significant healthcare provider in the southern Rhineland region with multiple existing medical facilities.
Malteser Deutschland announced last autumn its decision to transfer six of its eight acute care hospitals to new operators. This strategic move is attributed to rising operational costs and declining reimbursement rates, making it challenging for Malteser to sustainably provide high-quality care at all locations with its current structure and financial capacity.
Malteser's other regional activities, including its residential and outpatient care services, will remain unaffected by this change in hospital ownership. The organization also noted that discussions with suitable new operators for the St. Gerhardus Hospital in Bonn are progressing positively.
