Malteser sells two hospitals in Germany to new operator
Malteser Deutschland is transferring ownership of its acute care hospitals in Kamenz and Görlitz to Gesellschaft für Gesundheit und Versorgung Sachsen GmbH (GGS). The move aims to secure the facilities' future and staff employment.
Malteser Deutschland is handing over its acute care hospitals in Kamenz and Görlitz to the Gesellschaft für Gesundheit und Versorgung Sachsen GmbH (GGS). The transaction involves GGS acquiring all shares of the operating companies for both facilities, ensuring continuity and future development.
Malteser cited challenging sector conditions in Germany, including rising costs and decreasing reimbursements, as reasons for the sale. The organization stated that its current structures and financial resources were insufficient to sustainably maintain high-quality medical and nursing care at all its locations. GGS, described as a well-capitalized new entity with significant experience in integrated care and digitalization, is seen as an ideal partner to continue operating the hospitals.
The hospitals, St. Carolus in Görlitz and St. Johannes in Kamenz, will continue their operations under the new ownership. St. Carolus has 120 beds and 270 employees, serving approximately 4,800 inpatients annually. St. Johannes features 160 beds and 330 employees, treating around 7,600 inpatients each year. Additionally, both facilities provide outpatient services, including sleep laboratories and emergency rooms, handling roughly 20,000 ambulatory patients annually.
GGS has committed to avoiding redundancies for the next 2.5 years, securing employment for all approximately 600 staff members. The company plans substantial investments in modernization and digitalization, estimated to amount to tens of millions of euros. GGS aims to advance integrated ambulatory and inpatient care models, with a strong focus on digital solutions.
Malteser will continue its other services in the region, such as elderly care and nursing. The hospital divestment is part of a broader strategic realignment by Malteser in Germany.
