Malteser trains new hospice volunteers

Hospiz-Zentrum Volksdorf in Germany has completed a training course for 16 new volunteers to support terminally ill and dying individuals. The course, titled „Sterbende begleiten lernen…“ (Learning to Accompany the Dying…), equips participants for the sensitive role of hospice care.

The training emphasizes fundamental knowledge and prepares individuals for the specific demands of volunteering in end-of-life care. Key aspects include active listening, allowing closeness, enduring difficult emotional states, and simply being present for those in need.

Following the basic course, participants will begin gaining practical experience this summer, providing support in challenging life situations under close supervision. An advanced course in September will allow them to reflect on their experiences and further consolidate their skills.

These new volunteers represent a significant contribution to hospice work, demonstrating a commitment to compassion and dignified end-of-life support within the community.
