Man Group Analyzes State of ESG Investing in the US

Man Group PLC has released a report that analyzes the current state of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria within the United States investment market.

The survey delves into how asset owners and managers are navigating the complexities of ESG investing in the US. It reviews the growing body of regulations and the shifting public discourse surrounding ESG principles. The report notes that the ESG debate in the US has expanded significantly beyond just materiality to incorporate ethical and values-based considerations, including political alignments.

Man Group's analysis identifies the emergence of two primary camps in the US ESG landscape, each with distinct underlying priorities. The report details the roles of two key regulatory bodies: the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Department of Labor (DOL). The SEC is focused on investor protection and market integrity, requiring funds to categorize their ESG strategies and provide detailed disclosures.

The DOL's purview includes oversight of retirement plans, such as 401(k)s, with its regulations subject to changes based on administrative priorities. The SEC's recent guidance proposes classifying ESG funds into three categories: ESG Integration, ESG Focused, and ESG Impact, aiming to prevent greenwashing and ensure transparency.

However, Man Group points out that the SEC's proposed categorizations do not fully align with international frameworks from regions like the EU and the UK. The report aims to clarify these intricate issues and their implications for investment professionals and owners seeking to implement ESG strategies amidst the evolving regulatory environment.
