Man Group: Central Bank Shifts Drive Trend-Following Strategy Performance

Man Group PLC, a prominent asset manager, has reported that evolving expectations surrounding central bank monetary policy have been a primary driver of performance for trend-following strategies throughout 2024. The firm's analysis highlights significant volatility in bond markets, directly mirroring these changing perceptions.

The Barclay BTOP50 index, which tracks trend-following managers, showed a modest year-to-date gain of 1.9% through October. While the first quarter yielded strong returns, performance in the second and third quarters, as well as October, has been lackluster. Man Group attributes this partly to frequent shifts in the magnitude and direction of trend-following positions within fixed income.

According to the analysis, trend-following strategies moved to short positions in bonds early in 2024 as markets priced in multiple rate cuts. As rate cut expectations diminished over the summer, strategies turned long, only to revert to short positions in the fourth quarter. Such frequent transitions are detrimental to the performance of trend-following approaches, and bonds have been one of the year's weakest asset classes.

The report emphasizes that central bank actions and market interpretations of them have become paramount for strategy formulation since 2022. Rising inflation and more aggressive central bank responses have increased market sensitivity to economic data releases. While Japanese politics may present short-term market movements, Man Group suggests investors need to focus more on policy implications than solely on political events for broader market trends.
