Man Group evaluates shift into exotic and alternative asset markets
Russell Korgaonkar, CIO at Man AHL, details the operational and strategic complexities involved in pivoting from standard instruments to niche alternative markets.

Man AHL, the quantitative investment arm of Man Group, has spent recent years expanding its trading capabilities from mainstream futures and FX into complex alternative markets. According to CIO Russell Korgaonkar, the transition required building robust operational frameworks to navigate the regulatory and logistical challenges inherent in over-the-counter (OTC) products.
Korgaonkar notes that the allure of these markets lies in their potential to offer diversified alpha and unique risk profiles. However, the process of integrating assets—such as catastrophe bonds, credit default swaps, and cryptocurrencies—has often forced the firm to abandon initial assumptions. For instance, the intermittent trading patterns of catastrophe bonds required a departure from standard trend-following models toward a more passive strategy.
To manage the increased complexity and data processing requirements of these markets, the firm has increasingly utilized artificial intelligence, particularly large language models, to extract data from offering documents. This technological shift has become a cornerstone of maintaining scalability while accessing difficult-to-trade, yet potentially high-reward, alternative asset classes.
