Man Group Highlights Active Extension Strategies

Man Group PLC is highlighting the resurgence and relevance of active extension investment strategies in the current market environment. These strategies, which allow investors to take both long and short positions, had fallen out of favour following the Global Financial Crisis (GFC).

While previously popular, particularly in the US, active extension strategies saw a decline after performance struggles in 2008-2009. Man Group argues that today's market, characterized by concentrated returns in a limited number of stocks, makes these strategies particularly pertinent. They offer investors the flexibility to short-sell unattractive stocks while increasing long positions in favoured ones, aiming to generate excess returns without compromising risk management.

Unlike traditional long-only portfolios, which are restricted to buying attractive stocks, active extension portfolios can also short-sell underperforming equities. This provides greater flexibility and diversification, enabling managers to more effectively exploit market inefficiencies and potentially enhance returns. The strategy allows for a more diversified approach to active risk-taking.

According to Man Group, over 90% of assets under management in active extension strategies are now managed quantitatively. This is attributed to the ability of quantitative models to assess the entire investment universe and identify both long and short investment ideas efficiently. While successful implementation requires significant expertise in liquidity, regulation, and risk management, these strategies offer a compelling option for investors seeking enhanced, diversified returns.
