Man Group: Liquid Alternatives Gain Traction as 60/40 Portfolio Faces Challenges
The traditional 60/40 investment strategy is being tested by inflation and rising interest rates, creating an opening for re-emerging liquid alternatives.

Man Group PLC has observed that the classic 60/40 portfolio allocation, comprising 60 percent equities and 40 percent bonds, is facing challenges in the current macroeconomic environment. This strategy, which for decades relied on bonds cushioning equity declines, has been tested by periods where both asset classes experienced significant simultaneous losses, notably in 2022.
According to Man Group's analysis, persistent inflation exceeding approximately 2.5% can lead to a positive correlation between equities and bonds. This means they move in tandem, undermining the diversification benefits the 60/40 strategy depends on. This positive correlation has been observed since early 2021 and is expected to continue as long as inflation remains elevated and central banks, like the Federal Reserve, maintain restrictive monetary policies.
The traditional "Fed put" dynamic, where markets expected central bank intervention through rate cuts during economic stress, has weakened. The current environment of high inflation and public debt, coupled with potentially higher central bank pain thresholds for intervention, means investors can no longer rely on bonds as a consistent hedge against equity downturns.
In response to these challenges, Man Group notes a resurgence in interest for liquid alternatives. These investments, which are not confined to private markets but can also be publicly traded, offer a path to portfolio diversification by behaving differently from traditional assets, particularly during market turbulence. The focus is on accessing genuinely different return drivers rather than simply increasing the number of asset classes, as many alternative investments can carry hidden equity-like risks.
