Shanghai authorities have concluded a case involving a man accused of defrauding online platforms through AI-generated content. The defendant, identified as Zhang, utilized AI software to mass-produce articles deceptively presented as original, thereby securing illicit subsidies.

The investigation began after police noticed an anomaly: a surge of articles with similar, clickbait-style headlines but illogical and nonsensical content appearing across platforms on the same day. It was discovered that some individuals publishing these articles claimed they were merely performing a "one-click publish" task as part of a part-time online job.

Zhang recruited over a thousand individuals to provide their platform accounts for the scheme. These recruits received pre-written article drafts, which they were instructed to publish as original content. While they received nominal daily payments, Zhang pocketed the majority of the platform subsidies, totaling over $18,000 earned through this AI content manipulation over a two-month period.

Zhang was convicted of fraud and received a six-month prison sentence, suspended for one year, along with a fine. The AI software used in the scheme has been shut down, and the associated 1,000+ accounts have been banned. Prosecutors warned that such large-scale creation of rewritten content could facilitate the spread of misinformation, fraudulent advertising, and other illicit online activities.
