The Paris stock exchange experienced a significant downturn, pressured by rising bond yields and an increase in oil prices. French government debt remained under scrutiny with the commencement of the 2027 budget review.
German industrial production rebounded strongly in August, rising 2% after a July decline. This growth, driven by the construction sector despite automotive weakness, surpassed expectations.
The automotive sector saw mixed performance, with Renault, Stellantis, and Forvia gaining ground following reports of potential EU measures against Chinese hybrid vehicle imports. Forvia also announced a joint venture in India with the Anand group to expand its market presence. Valeo, however, experienced a decline.
La Française de l'Energie plunged after reporting a latent loss due to over-hedging in the gas market. The banking sector remained under pressure, with Société Générale and BNP Paribas declining. Remy Cointreau rose following a positive assessment of its outlook, while Elis announced significant bond conversions. Alstom provided preliminary positive indications regarding its order pipeline.
The CAC 40 index ultimately closed down 1.22% at 7,769.21 points, with a trading volume of 3.946 billion euros.
