Markus Sehl Appointed Süddeutsche Zeitung Correspondent in Karlsruhe
Markus Sehl will become the Süddeutsche Zeitung's correspondent in Karlsruhe starting January 1, 2027. He will cover national legal and constitutional developments.
Markus Sehl will assume the role of correspondent for the Süddeutsche Zeitung in Karlsruhe on January 1, 2027. His reporting will focus on the Federal Constitutional Court, the Federal Court of Justice, and the Federal Public Prosecutor General, as well as national legal and constitutional developments. Sehl succeeds Wolfgang Janisch, who has reported from Karlsruhe for SZ since 2010 and will retire at the end of the year.
Sehl joins Süddeutsche Zeitung from Legal Tribune Online, where he served as an editor since 2018 and deputy editor-in-chief since 2022. During his tenure, he also worked as a freelance journalist for publications including Die Zeit, ARD, and Der Spiegel.
The incoming correspondent studied law at Humboldt University in Berlin, completing his first state examination in 2012. He also pursued studies at the German Literature Institute in Leipzig and earned a doctorate from Humboldt University in 2018 for his thesis on legislative intent.
The position is significant as Karlsruhe is home to Germany's two most important judicial bodies and the nation's chief prosecutor's office, handling cases of national legal and political consequence.
