Mars Launches Pet Adoption Resource Hub Amidst Owner Hesitancy

Mars, Incorporated has introduced a new online resource center aimed at facilitating pet adoptions and supporting new owners. This launch follows a global study revealing that uncertainties regarding a pet's health, behavior, and compatibility with a household are significant deterrents for nearly a third of potential adopters. The research, involving over 26,000 individuals across 14 countries, highlights a critical need for expert guidance throughout the adoption process.

The "Mars Adoption Hub" offers practical advice and expert-backed resources to help prospective owners navigate common adoption barriers with confidence. A key focus is on supporting the transition of pets into new homes, including guidance on nutrition. The study found that 71% of adopted pets change their diet after leaving the shelter, underscoring the importance of expert advice on managing dietary changes safely and effectively.

Esther Bijsmans, a veterinarian and pet nutrition expert at Mars Pet Nutrition, emphasizes the importance of patience and a gradual adjustment period for newly adopted pets. She advocates for the "3-3-3 rule," suggesting three days for the pet to feel secure, three weeks for establishing routines and building trust, and three months for significant adaptation. Bijsmans also advises a slow transition to a new diet over 7–10 days to support digestive health.

Mars is also expanding its "Global Adoption Weekend 2026" initiative to over 30 countries, aiming to bolster support for local animal shelters. The company intends for the Adoption Hub to serve as a reliable source of information, making the experience of bringing a pet home more exciting and less overwhelming for families by equipping them with the necessary knowledge and support.
