Marvell Releases Second-Generation CXL Memory Expansion Controller

Marvell announced its second-generation Structera X series CXL memory expansion controllers, featuring industry-first 6-channel memory support and enabling memory pooling across up to four hosts.

13 October 2026

Marvell launched its second-generation Structera X series CXL memory expansion controllers, including models 3406 and 3506, on October 12. These chips introduce industry-first support for six memory channels on the downstream side.

The new controllers support up to 9TB of memory on 18 DDR4 RDIMMs for the 3406 model and 6TB on 12 DDR5 RDIMMs for the 3506 model. A key feature is the ability to share this large memory pool across up to four host machines, a capability designed to enhance efficiency in demanding computing environments.

Marvell reports that the Structera X 3406/3506 offers a fivefold increase in LZ4 compression throughput compared to the previous generation, reaching 250GB/s. This allows for 2-3 times more effective memory capacity. The controllers also incorporate enterprise-grade RAS features and PQC security.

Engineering samples of the Marvell Structera X 3406/3506 CXL memory expansion controllers are expected in the first quarter of 2027.
