Mass Timber Construction Featured in Silicon Valley Art Gallery and Wine Bar

The Edes Building, a new two-story art gallery and wine bar in Morgan Hill, Silicon Valley, prominently features mass timber construction. Designed by architecture firm KTGY, the project specifies cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glulam posts and beams.

The selection of mass timber for the 6,800-square-foot structure was driven by its aesthetic qualities, biophilic properties, and a reduced carbon footprint compared to alternatives like concrete and steel. This choice also facilitates compliance with Morgan Hill’s sustainable building provisions.

Mass timber construction contributed to an efficient building schedule, with KTGY reporting that the period from the placement of the first post and beam to the topping off of the CLT roof took only one month. The building aims to fill a gap in a key downtown intersection and provide continuity to a pedestrian promenade.

The Edes Building's design is intended to be a work of art itself, with a striking, sculpture-like exterior inspired by the local landscape. The interior will house a wine bar and cafe, featuring flexible gallery spaces with custom display units. Construction began in September 2022, with completion anticipated in the first quarter of 2024.
