Match Group survey explores dating attitudes among Gen Alpha

Match Group has conducted a study of 823 U.S. teens aged 13 to 15 to understand their expectations regarding romantic relationships. While only 20% of the respondents have been in a relationship—a significant decrease compared to Gen Z at the same age—the findings suggest a shift in priorities. Respondents indicated that friendship is a top priority, with 64% stating that people should be friends before pursuing a romantic partnership.

Chine Mmegwa, head of strategy and corporate development at Match Group, noted that this generation displays a level of optimism that was absent during the pandemic-affected years of Gen Z. Approximately 84% of Gen Alpha teens surveyed expressed confidence in their future, and many maintain an interest in traditional milestones such as marriage and homeownership. Mmegwa suggested that because these teens derive much of their social fulfillment from friendships, they feel less urgency to engage in active dating.

As the broader industry faces declining engagement and user fatigue regarding existing dating apps, Match Group is using this data to rethink its future service offerings. The company aims to evolve its models to avoid the transactional nature that has characterized the experiences of older demographics, preparing for when the oldest members of Gen Alpha enter the market as adults.
