Materna and ITZBund initiate pilot project for AI-supported software development

The ITZBund has partnered with Materna and NVIDIA to test generative AI for software development within the federal government’s secure KIPITZ infrastructure.

5 November 2026

The Federal Information Technology Center (ITZBund) is launching a pilot project to integrate generative artificial intelligence into its software development workflows. The initiative, supported by Dortmund-based IT service provider Materna and hardware provider NVIDIA, aims to address the shortage of skilled IT workers by automating routine tasks such as code generation and error analysis.

The project utilizes KIPITZ, a sovereign AI portal developed by the ITZBund to ensure that AI applications remain within secure, government-controlled IT environments. By bypassing commercial public cloud services, the administration intends to meet strict national data protection and security standards while leveraging NVIDIA’s high-performance computing capabilities.

Following a successful proof-of-concept phase, the collaboration is now entering a real-world testing environment. Project developers will use AI models to accelerate the creation of test cases and documentation, theoretically allowing personnel to focus on more complex, creative programming tasks.

This pilot is part of a broader strategic partnership established between Materna and NVIDIA earlier in 2025. The companies intend to develop scalable AI infrastructure for the public sector and critical infrastructure, with the ITZBund project serving as a primary implementation case.
