An alliance for mathematical and artificial intelligence laboratories was established at Tsinghua University in Beijing on October 11. The new research initiative aims to deepen the integration of AI and mathematics across several key areas.

The alliance will focus on developing large models dedicated to mathematical science, AI-assisted mathematical formal proofs and conjecture discovery, and explainable AI and interdisciplinary intelligent computing. This development occurs amidst growing AI influence, following recent publications by entities like OpenAI on mathematical research.

Shing-Tung Yau, the alliance leader and dean of Tsinghua's Yau Mathematical Sciences Center, emphasized the need for mathematics to adapt to the AI era during the establishment ceremony. He stated that the rise of AI compels a re-evaluation of mathematics' fundamental values and requires researchers to actively engage with its evolution.

The alliance unveiled over ten key "AI + mathematics" research outcomes and directions at the event. These cover diverse scientific fields, including geometry, quantum computing, and life sciences. For instance, AI was utilized to aid in exploring proof strategies and simplifying calculations in one project, while mathematicians focused on the theoretical development of the proof.

The alliance brings together over 1,000 mathematicians and researchers from leading institutions in China. Its objective is to provide advanced guidance to young scholars and students and to foster resource integration for developing China's own mathematical AI models.
