Finnish logistics company Matkahuolto has received approval from the international Science Based Targets (SBT) initiative for its ambitious short-term climate goals. The targets are aligned with the Paris Agreement and aim to halve direct and indirect operational emissions, as well as value chain emissions, by 2030 compared to 2020 levels.

The company now joins a global network of over 6,500 companies committed to science-based emission reductions to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Matkahuolto's Chief Responsibility Officer, Jaana Korkiakoski, emphasized the significant role of transportation and logistics companies in combating climate change.

Matkahuolto has developed a comprehensive climate roadmap outlining 44 emission reduction measures, informed by scenario calculations and external expert consultation. The company has already implemented substantial actions, including reducing emissions from its digital services by over 80% in 2023 and phasing out fossil fuels in its own long-haul trucks.

Beyond short-term goals, Matkahuolto continues its commitment to sustainable development. In 2024, the company plans to enhance collaboration with its partners to jointly advance climate objectives. The SBT initiative provides companies with tools to track emission reductions and their implementation through a science-based methodology.
