Matkahuolto's Mystery Bus Trips Sold Out – Nearly 700 Traveled to Unknown Destinations

Matkahuolto successfully organized "Mystery Trips" in early July, taking nearly 700 Finns on bus journeys to unknown domestic holiday destinations. Travelers only discovered their final stop during the trip, and all ten offered routes, including additional buses due to high demand, were completely sold out.

The trips departed from Helsinki, Jyväskylä, and Oulu. The mystery destinations included locations such as the village of Mathildedal, Pyhä-Häkki National Park, and the island of Ohtakari. Each trip was a full-day excursion to the chosen location. The concept proved highly popular, with several routes selling out within just a couple of days before the official campaign launch.

"The tremendous popularity even surprised us a bit," said Petri Lindqvist, Matkahuolto's Head of Travel Services. He noted that due to the strong demand, additional buses had to be ordered for several routes. Matkahuolto is now considering expanding and repeating the concept for future holiday seasons, such as autumn or winter breaks, highlighting Finland's diverse travel opportunities.

Feedback from the passengers was overwhelmingly positive, with many appreciating the opportunity to travel spontaneously and with an element of surprise. The Mystery Trips also aligned with the travel trend emphasizing experiences, spontaneity, and responsible tourism. Matkahuolto sees the concept as a way to showcase lesser-known domestic travel destinations.
