Treatment decisions for small-cell lung cancer may evolve following new findings from the international phase III MAVERICK trial. The study indicated that brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) surveillance, without prophylactic cranial irradiation, improved cognitive failure-free survival and substantially reduced serious treatment-related adverse events.
The trial's core finding suggests that monitoring the brain with MRI provides sufficient protection against cancer spread to the brain for many patients. This approach is less burdensome than previous standards and significantly decreases the incidence of side effects, particularly cognitive impairments that can affect quality of life.
The MAVERICK trial, also designated SWOG S1827, gathered data from multiple countries. Its outcomes challenge the established necessity of prophylactic cranial irradiation, shifting focus towards improving patient well-being by avoiding potentially unnecessary treatments.
