Max Friedlander joins early-stage AI startup Petrarch
Middlebury student Max Friedlander has joined Y Combinator-backed Petrarch, an AI data firm, as one of its first employees.

Max Friedlander, a 20-year-old applied mathematics major at Middlebury College, has stepped into an operations and sales role at Petrarch. The company, which is part of the Y Combinator S26 cohort, supplies specialized data sets for frontier AI laboratories.
Friedlander joined the startup as its fifth employee after a series of conversations with the founders. His responsibilities include managing complex contract negotiations and legal reviews, a level of autonomy he contrasts with typical entry-level roles at larger firms. He notes that the experience requires handling significant emotional shifts and high-stakes deal restructuring on tight deadlines.
For Friedlander, the move represents a shift from traditional internships to a founder-led environment. He intends to eventually launch his own venture, viewing his current tenure at Petrarch as foundational for learning the dynamics of the AI data industry.
