Maxon Cinema 4D Guide Details Splitting Large 3D Models for Printing

Maxon has released a guide detailing how to split large 3D models into smaller, manageable parts using Cinema 4D for 3D printing applications. The guide focuses on two primary techniques: manual splitting with the Line Cut tool and dividing models into a grid using Boolean operations.

Effective splitting requires planning the cut placement, ideally along natural seams or flat surfaces to simplify assembly. The size of each resulting part is also constrained by the dimensions of the 3D printer's build volume.

The manual method using Line Cut is suitable for simpler models, allowing users to draw a precise cut line. After splitting, the resulting open edges must be closed to ensure printability. The guide presents two options: the Thicken Generator, which adds wall thickness to create a hollow part, and Close Polygon Hole, which creates a solid, watertight surface.

The second method employs a Boolean generator and a primitive cube. Users size the cube to match their printer's build volume and position it over the model. The Boolean operation then intersects the cube and model, effectively slicing the model into sections that fit within the cube's dimensions. This approach is efficient for dividing a model into multiple grid-like pieces.

These techniques address the common challenge of printing objects larger than a 3D printer's capacity, providing users with practical workflows to successfully segment and print complex models.
