Maynard Institute to Host Journalism Editors and Managers Training in California
The Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education will hold its tuition-free Propel Regional Training for editors and managers in Burbank, Calif., Oct. 22-24. The program aims to equip journalists with skills for the evolving news landscape.
Oakland, Calif. – Sept. 24, 2026 – The Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education is set to conduct its Propel Regional Training for editors and managers in Burbank, California, from October 22-24.
The tuition-free program offers two and a half days of editing and management training, coaching, and community building for journalists of all backgrounds working across California's diverse media outlets. This initiative is a collaboration between the Maynard Institute, California State University, Northridge (CSUN), and The Tom and Ethel Bradley Center.
The training targets frontline, mid-career, and student editors and managers across print, broadcast, digital, and audio platforms. Faculty and panelists include award-winning editors, news leaders, and professors. They will provide hands-on workshops and tailored coaching to help news leaders manage teams, cover news effectively, and build resilience.
Curriculum topics include management strategies for disruptive times, essential editing techniques, project management, ethical AI use in newsrooms, and navigating complex social issues. The program will conclude with a panel discussing the state of media in California, sustainability frameworks, and strengthening newsrooms amidst rapid technological change and societal challenges.
The Maynard Institute's programs are open to all applicants and aim to address the underrepresentation of people of color and other historically disadvantaged groups in media professions. This training is part of the Propel Initiative, a broader effort led by the Maynard Institute in partnership with American Community Media, California Black Media, and Latino Media Collaborative.
