McDonald’s Adds Protein-Focused Menu Items Amid Major Overhaul

McDonald’s is introducing a range of new protein-focused menu items as part of a significant overhaul of its restaurant operations. The fast-food giant announced plans for an $8.5 billion investment over the next decade to update its locations and offerings.

The menu expansion includes new wraps, grilled chicken sandwiches, bowls, and egg bites, designed to meet growing customer demand for high-protein foods. This trend is partly driven by the increasing use of GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro, which often require users to increase protein intake to preserve muscle mass.

Beyond menu changes, McDonald’s is investing in technology to improve efficiency and customer experience. New features will include dedicated lockers for delivery orders, modernized kitchen layouts, and an AI-powered system called ArchIQ, developed with Google. This system will assist with inventory management, scheduling, and drive-thru order taking in multiple languages.

The company also plans to enhance the in-dining experience with larger play areas and more visible coffee preparation zones. Despite the ambitious plans, the significant cost of the overhaul has raised concerns among investors, leading to a nearly 5% drop in McDonald's stock price following the announcement. Franchise owners are also facing substantial costs, with individual remodels expected to nearly double in price over the decade.
