McDonald's to Deploy AI for Drive-Thru Order System

McDonald's Corporation is preparing to implement Archy, an artificial intelligence system intended to streamline the processing of drive-thru orders at its restaurants. The new system will enable automatic reception of customer orders in both English and Spanish, freeing up employees for other responsibilities.

The company estimates that Archy could save a typical restaurant at least 50 labor hours per week. McDonald's emphasizes that the AI's purpose is not to replace workers but to automate routine tasks and enhance customer service, a different approach compared to companies focusing primarily on labor cost reduction through AI.

Archy is part of a broader technology initiative supported by McDonald's significant investment. The company is providing approximately $8.5 billion in support to franchisees through 2036 as part of its McDonald's > NEXT strategy. This funding aims to modernize restaurants, improve operations, and accelerate the deployment of new technologies, including the generative AI-enabled ArchIQ platform for restaurant operations.

The company's AI strategy centers on addressing practical operational challenges. Key areas include improving order accuracy, inventory management, and scheduling. McDonald's states these efforts will allow employees to dedicate more time to customer service and reduce the burden of repetitive work.
