MCEDV Launches Sea Bags Collection to Support Domestic Violence Survivors

The Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence (MCEDV) has introduced a limited-edition collection of tote bags and cosmetic cases, known as the "Liberation Collection," to aid survivors of domestic violence. Launched in October, coinciding with National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, 35% of the proceeds from the sale of these items will benefit MCEDV's Liberation Fund. This fund provides crucial financial assistance to help survivors escape abusive situations and rebuild their lives.

Financial abuse is a significant factor in domestic violence, present in 99% of cases nationally. Many survivors face barriers to accessing their own funds, hindering their ability to leave or start anew. The Liberation Fund has provided over $675,000 to nearly 1,400 survivors since 2020, covering essential expenses such as security deposits, legal fees, and educational supplies.

Francine Garland Stark, Executive Director of MCEDV, highlighted the connection between financial concerns and prolonged abuse. "Survivors don't just need shelter, they need resources to rebuild economically independent lives," Stark stated. "When you buy or gift a Liberation tote or cosmetic case, you're funding someone's path to safety." The bags are crafted by Sea Bags in Maine, utilizing repurposed sails.

The Liberation Collection, a collaboration with Words From The Woods, features a design symbolizing growth and healing. The items are available for pre-sale on the MCEDV website. Orders placed by October 31 are guaranteed to arrive by December 25.
