McKinsey to Use AI Client Simulation in Interviews
McKinsey & Company is incorporating an AI simulation of a client into its interview process for some entry-level candidates. The 10-minute interaction aims to assess how applicants handle client scenarios.

Consulting firm McKinsey & Company will use an AI simulation of a client as part of its interview process for some entry-level positions. Candidates will engage in a 10-minute conversation with the AI, designed to mimic client interactions common in a consultant's role.
The AI tool is intended to reflect approximately 80% of scenarios consultants encounter daily, but it is not designed to simulate an "unhinged" client. Human interviewers will be present to assess candidates' performance and how they navigate the simulated situations; the AI itself will not score applicants.
McKinsey is initially testing this simulation with undergraduates applying for business analyst roles in select offices. The aim is to provide a more dynamic and practical evaluation of a candidate's problem-solving and communication skills under pressure, complementing traditional interview methods.
This move reflects a growing trend in the professional services industry to leverage technology for more objective and comprehensive candidate assessments. The firm expects the simulation to offer deeper insights into a candidate's suitability for demanding client-facing roles.
