McLaren Unveils McL 6GT Concept, Returns to Manual Transmission

McLaren Automotive has unveiled the McL 6GT concept car at Monterey Car Week, a model set for limited production in 2028. The vehicle represents the most substantial design departure for the British manufacturer in over 15 years.

The McL 6GT draws inspiration from 1960s racing cars and is positioned as a spiritual successor to the M6GT, the only road car built by founder Bruce McLaren. Notably, it will feature a six-speed manual gearbox and a three-pedal setup, marking the first time a McLaren road car has offered a manual transmission since the F1 in 1992.

This move deviates from McLaren's recent design language, which has largely featured similar aesthetics, carbon fiber chassis, and V8 engines paired with dual-clutch automatic transmissions. The concept's exterior features a long-body design reminiscent of classic racers, with prominent headlights and large air intakes located below the doors.

Inside, the cabin is equipped with a large digital display and metallic controls. McLaren states that the 6GT's primary focus is not on achieving ultimate performance metrics, but rather on enhancing the tactile and mechanical connection between the driver and the vehicle, aiming for a responsive and engaging driving experience.
