MDR: Saxony-Anhalt Election Increases Pressure on Chancellor Merz

MDR Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk reports on the growing pressure on Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) after the party's defeat in the Saxony-Anhalt state election. The election results have sparked internal party discussions and heightened uncertainty about Merz's position as chancellor.

Following the loss in Saxony-Anhalt, the CDU leadership is convening to evaluate the results. Chancellor Merz has canceled his planned trip to New York for the UN General Assembly due to internal political pressure. Upcoming elections in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Berlin are also seen as crucial for Merz's political future.

Former state premier Reiner Haseloff (CDU) has recommended that Chancellor Merz adopt a more empathetic approach towards citizens. In an interview with the television channel Welt, Haseloff stated that Merz should rediscover his personal connection with the people and use empathetic language in critical situations. He also admitted that the CDU's approval ratings are at their lowest in German history, partly explaining the poor election outcomes.

Protests and warnings from the church and diaconal services against the AfD's political stances have also increased political tension. The Evangelical Church in Germany and its diaconal work have expressed concern over the AfD's migration and church policies, comparing them to the "church struggle" during the GDR era.
