MultiDimension Technology (MDT), a supplier of magnetic sensors and a pioneer in TMR (Tunneling Magnetoresistance) technology, has launched the TMR1228D, a bipolar, dual-axis magnetic switch IC. The device is designed for applications including smart metering, industrial position sensing, speed measurement, and motion control.

The TMR1228D integrates high-sensitivity TMR sensor elements with a CMOS signal processing circuit to convert magnetic fields into precise digital output signals. Unlike conventional Hall-effect switches that rely on pulsed operation to reduce power consumption, the TMR1228D leverages the inherent low power consumption of the TMR principle for continuous magnetic field detection, consuming only 1.5 μA per axis. This approach avoids detection dropouts due to intermittent sampling, ensuring faster response and higher reliability for constantly active sensing applications.

The IC features independent detection channels for the X and Y axes with separate outputs. It also supports industry-standard A/B quadrature outputs for detecting rotational and linear position, speed, and direction. This simplifies the design of motion sensing systems while offering greater flexibility in multi-axis magnetic sensing.

With an operating sensitivity of ±5 Gauss, the TMR1228D allows for the use of smaller magnets and larger air gaps. For applications requiring stronger magnetic fields, MDT also offers the TMR1222D, which features operating thresholds of ±17 Gauss in the same package. The TMR1228D is suitable for electronic water, gas, and heat meters, quadrature encoder systems, and other battery-powered or always-on sensor applications.
