Mecklenburg's Wilds Attract 'Wild West' Lifestyle

The open and untamed landscapes of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are attracting individuals seeking a lifestyle that echoes the Wild West. These individuals, some referring to themselves as gauchos, are dedicating their lives to horses, sheep, and cattle, finding a community in rural settings and open plains.

Amancio Mendiondo from Argentina is one such individual, establishing a "Cavalan" ranch in Wardow. He offers Western-style horseback riding tours for tourists exploring the Mecklenburg countryside. Similarly, sheep farmers Patricia Sachau and Hannes Hoyme have relocated from Ostholstein to Mecklenburg, seeking space and large grazing areas for their substantial flocks, which they can no longer find in their native region.

Sheep farmer Patricia Sachau, working with her partner Hannes, manages a flock of 1,600 sheep. They utilize gaucho Amancio for assistance with livestock movement. Mathias Schilling, another "island farmer" from the island of Öhe, raises cattle near Hiddensee. He has developed a direct sales model through multiple restaurants and farm shops.

Karina Vandersee, known as the "cowgirl," operates the "Comanche" ranch on the edge of the Nossentiner Heide. She dedicates herself to Western-style horse shows, training on weekends to entertain audiences with performances reminiscent of the frontier era.

These individuals represent a shared pursuit of rural living, independence, and a lifestyle deeply connected to nature and animal husbandry, strongly evoking the American frontier of the 19th century.
