MED-EL Launches Totally Invisible Cochlear Implant

MED-EL has announced the launch of the TICI UNICO cochlear implant, which the company describes as the world's first and only totally invisible solution. This new device places all components, including the microphone, entirely beneath the skin, eliminating the need for external parts.

TICI UNICO is designed for individuals with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss. It provides continuous access to sound throughout the day and night, enabling hearing even during sleep. A key challenge in the device's development was creating microphone technology that functions through the skin. MED-EL states that the device offers hearing performance comparable to their established cochlear implant solutions.

According to the company, TICI UNICO provides hearing without external devices, reducing concerns about loss, damage, or maintenance. It also allows for hearing during water-based activities and uninterrupted listening while charging. CEO Ingeborg Hochmair described the device as "a dream come true" and "a new chapter in the history of hearing," which could open opportunities for more people.

The device's technology is based on decades of experience in hearing implants. The implanted microphone is designed to deliver clear sound through the skin. According to clinical investigations and experience to date, hearing performance is comparable to existing solutions. TICI UNICO is compatible with 1.5 and 3.0 Tesla MRI under specified conditions.

MED-EL has been a significant player in the hearing implant market for years. The launch of TICI UNICO expands their offerings and aims to meet patient desires for a fully integrated hearing solution. The new technology is expected to provide a new level of freedom and convenience in hearing care for users.
