Medianama: Challenges persist in Apple's 18+ rating for dating apps

Apple will mandate an 18+ age rating for all dating and AI companion apps by 2027. Industry analysis warns that the reliance on self-reported data limits the policy's effectiveness.

4 November 2026

Apple has announced that all applications featuring dating or relationship connections must carry an 18+ age rating on its App Store by January 12, 2027. This requirement extends to AI-driven virtual companions that engage users in sexual or romantic content. Developers are now required to disclose whether their software includes such features during the submission process.

According to an analysis by Medianama, the policy faces significant implementation hurdles, particularly in markets like India where Apple does not independently verify user ages. The current system relies entirely on the birthdate provided by the user during account creation. As a result, minors can easily bypass age restrictions by entering inaccurate data, rendering the rating system largely symbolic unless paired with more rigorous identity checks.

Industry experts argue that truly effective verification would necessitate mandatory identity authentication, potentially linking digital profiles to government-backed systems like Aadhaar in India. Critics also point out that Apple’s vague definition of "relationships" creates ambiguity, while the conflation of general dating platforms with sexual AI companions draws concern over the criteria used for content classification.
