Medianama highlights unanswered questions regarding Meta and cybersecurity oversight

Indian tech news outlet Medianama is demanding transparency from Meta and government authorities regarding content moderation, platform censorship, and financial cyberattacks.

31 October 2026

Medianama has released a report detailing a series of questions posed to stakeholders and Meta throughout October that remain largely unanswered. The publication argues that the lack of institutional transparency obscures critical issues regarding platform accountability and digital safety.

A primary point of contention involves the presence of advertisements linked to child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on Meta’s platforms. While Meta has touted the deployment of AI tools to detect such content, the company has failed to provide specific data on the scale of the issue or clarify its compliance with Indian law regarding the reporting of such offenses to local police. Critics argue that Meta’s reliance on third-party channels for reporting has historically hindered transparency.

The report also examines the sudden blocking of the Malayalam news outlet NoCap, which occurred following a government notice that provided no specific justification. The case has reached the Kerala High Court, as the outlet seeks to understand the legal basis for the restriction, which decimated the organization's revenue and audience engagement.

Finally, Medianama addressed reports of AI-driven cyberattacks targeting non-banking financial companies. Despite estimates of significant financial losses, Indian regulatory bodies, including the Reserve Bank of India, have not released official data or mandated that entities notify the public about incidents affecting their data or funds.
