Mediators Report Progress in Middle East Diplomatic Efforts

Mediators have achieved progress in efforts to return the United States and Iran to negotiations and avert a wider conflict in the Middle East, regional officials stated Monday. A pause in attacks has followed a period of rapidly escalating tensions.

The comments emerged after neither the U.S. nor Iran reported carrying out attacks for three consecutive days, providing a respite after nearly two weeks of sustained bombardments that had raised fears of war.

Mediators, led by Qatar and Pakistan, are working to bridge the gap between Washington and Tehran to reinstate an interim ceasefire deal that had been significantly undermined by recent exchanges of fire. While direct negotiations are not occurring, messages are being conveyed between the parties.

Concerns persist as shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has fallen to a three-week low. Iran has also criticized Ukraine over a prior strike on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea.
