MedStar Health Hospitals' Heart Surgery Programs Earn Top Quality Ratings

Two MedStar Health hospitals, MedStar Washington Hospital Center and MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, have received the highest quality designation, a three-star rating, from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS). These awards place their cardiac surgery programs among the nation's best for patient outcomes and surgical care.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center earned three-star ratings in three categories: Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG), Mitral Valve Repair/Replacement (MVRR), and a composite measure for multiple procedures. MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore received three-star ratings in two categories: Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) and the composite measure for multiple procedures.

The STS rating system evaluates patient outcomes from U.S. hospitals against established benchmarks. It is considered one of healthcare's most respected quality metrics, assisting patients and their families in making informed decisions about where to receive heart surgery.

The latest ratings cover the period from early 2023 through the end of 2025. The STS National Database contains over 10 million surgical records from more than 4,300 surgeons, capturing over 95% of adult cardiac surgeries performed in the U.S. The database's nationwide reach makes STS ratings one of the most trusted measures of quality in cardiac surgery.
