MedStar Washington Hospital Center Receives Third Consecutive ANCC Pathway to Excellence Recognition
MedStar Washington Hospital Center has been awarded its third consecutive Pathway to Excellence® designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The hospital also received its first-ever 'Distinction' honor, the highest level of the program.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center has maintained its Pathway to Excellence® designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) for a third consecutive term. In addition to the redesignation, the hospital received the highest possible recognition, 'Distinction™,' signifying exceptional performance and sustained nursing excellence. This dual achievement marks a significant recognition of the hospital's commitment to high standards in nursing care.
The Pathway to Excellence program identifies healthcare organizations that create positive nursing practice environments. To earn redesignation, organizations undergo a rigorous review, and nurses validate through confidential surveys that their workplace meets established criteria. The 'Distinction' level indicates that the hospital not only meets but exceeds these requirements.
Ariam Yitbarek, DNP, RN, chief nursing officer at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, stated, "This award reaffirms our commitment to nursing excellence and validates the extraordinary dedication of our nurses." She further noted the significance of this achievement, especially following the hospital's Magnet® designation, also from the ANCC, in June 2025. Holding both designations places the hospital among a select group of healthcare facilities nationwide.
The hospital's journey began in 2016 with the adoption of the Pathway to Excellence framework. It first achieved the designation in 2017 and has consistently maintained its standards since. The latest designation is valid through 2030, underscoring a sustained focus on fostering an environment where nurses can provide optimal patient care.
