Chinese technology firm Meituan has confirmed reports of staff reductions affecting several of its business lines, which began in May. The company stated that the actual number of departing employees was less than 2,000, a figure it described as not substantial relative to its total workforce.

Reports indicated that the layoffs impacted multiple departments across Meituan's core businesses, including its group-buying platform and its rapid delivery service (Meituan Shan Gou), along with commercialization efforts. Some teams reportedly saw up to 20% of their staff let go, while others saw employees integrated into different departments or transferred to new roles.

Meituan's employee count stood at 112,123 as of early 2025. In the past year, the company reported total revenue of approximately 36.49 billion euros, an 8% increase year-over-year. However, it also recorded a net loss of nearly 2.34 billion euros, a shift from profitability in the prior year. The core local commerce segment, a key area for Meituan, also reported an operating loss.
