Meizhou Island Expands Tourism Appeal With Mazu Culture

Meizhou Island, located in Putian City in southeast China's Fujian Province, is enhancing its tourism appeal by leveraging the cultural heritage of the sea goddess Mazu. Previously known primarily as a destination for temple visits, the island has in recent years expanded its attractions to offer more diverse experiences.

According to a staff member from the island's administrative committee, visitors previously came mainly to worship Mazu, with visits often concluding within half a day. Today, an increasing number of tourists, including families and younger visitors, are treating the island as a vacation destination and extending their stays to enjoy island life.

Last year, Meizhou Island received approximately 3.23 million tourist visits, surpassing the 3-million mark for the first time. The trend towards slower tourism has led to longer stays, during which visitors explore the island's scenery and relaxed pace of life.

Popular activities on the island include dressing in traditional attire and taking photos against the backdrop of distinctive local architecture. Visitors can also experience "a day in the life of Mazu" at her former residence in the Mazu Heritage Park, and visit the Mazu Culture Museum and the Ping'an Pagoda. Evening entertainment includes large Mazu-themed performances and fireworks.
