Meizhou Island in Fujian Enhances Tourism Appeal

Meizhou Island, located in Putian City, Fujian Province, has enhanced its tourism appeal by diversifying beyond its traditional Mazu worship activities. The island aims to attract visitors for longer stays by offering a broader range of experiences beyond a typical half-day temple visit.

Mazu, born Lin Mo on the island in 960, is revered as a protector of sailors and is a significant cultural figure. The belief and customs associated with Mazu are recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Historically, many visitors came to Meizhou Island primarily to pay homage to Mazu, often departing the same day.

In recent years, the island has introduced new attractions to cater to evolving tourist preferences. These include large-scale cultural performances that integrate augmented reality technology with live shows, opportunities for visitors to wear traditional costumes for photos, and immersive experiences like "A Day in the Life of Mazu." These developments have broadened the island's appeal, leading to an increase in family visits, road trips, and younger tourists.

Meizhou Island welcomed approximately 3.23 million visitors in 2025, surpassing the 3 million mark for the first time. The rise of slow tourism and the island's relaxed pace have encouraged visitors to extend their stays for multiple days, enjoying the coastal scenery and island life. The island's administrative committee notes a shift from quick visits to more extended stays, transforming the island into a more comprehensive travel destination.
