Meizhou Island in Fujian Expands Tourist Appeal

Meizhou Island, located in Putian City, Fujian Province in southeast China, is expanding its tourism appeal to encompass more than just its traditional Mazu cultural sites. The initiative aims to attract visitors for longer stays by offering a wider range of experiences.

Previously, many visitors journeyed to the island for day trips primarily to worship Mazu. The expanded offerings, including cultural performances, opportunities to dress in traditional attire, and exhibitions delving into Mazu culture, are designed to provide a more comprehensive experience of the island's heritage and natural beauty.

The Meizhou Island tourism center reported approximately 3.23 million tourist visits in 2025, surpassing the three million mark for the first time. The island's administration has focused on diversifying cultural experiences to position it as a desirable holiday destination rather than just a brief stopover.

Developments include the Mazu Cultural Museum, the Mazu Heritage Park, and the Ping'an Pagoda. New activities also feature dressing in traditional clothing for photoshoots and Mazu-themed large-scale performances and evening fireworks. The goal is to transform the island's appeal from a single-temple pilgrimage site to a multifaceted island destination.
