Melissa Chiu Appointed Director of Guggenheim Museum

Melissa Chiu, long-time director of the Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, has been appointed the new director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City. Her tenure at the Guggenheim begins on September 1.

Chiu departs the Hirshhorn after a decade-long leadership where she oversaw significant growth. During her tenure, attendance tripled, fundraising increased, and the museum's permanent collections were expanded. She also initiated the revitalization of the Sculpture Garden.

Chiu has described the position at the Guggenheim as a "dream job," highlighting the museum's architectural significance and its history of presenting notable exhibitions. She anticipates engaging with the museum's renowned collection and exhibition legacy.

The move to New York City presents a different audience dynamic compared to her previous role. While the Hirshhorn served a broad national audience, often including first-time museum visitors, the Guggenheim audience is typically more localized and accustomed to contemporary art.

Chiu's experience at the Hirshhorn, part of the vast Smithsonian Institution, focused on making modern art accessible. Her appointment marks a significant transition as she takes on leadership of one of the world's most iconic art museums.
