Memorial Healthcare System Maintains Historic Low Tax Rate

The South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners has unanimously voted to keep its millage rate at 0.0805, a historic low for the district. This rate, maintained since 2025, was approved as Memorial Healthcare System continues to expand services and facilities across South Florida.

Elizabeth Justen, chair of the board, stated that maintaining the lowest tax rate reflects a commitment to fiscal responsibility with taxpayer funds. She emphasized that community needs are central to the board's decision-making.

Despite rising healthcare costs and industry pressures, Memorial Healthcare System is investing in patient care, technology, and facilities. The system's financial performance has allowed for these investments without increasing reliance on property tax revenue.

President and CEO Shane Strum noted that Memorial's financial strength enables future investments without burdening the community. He highlighted the expansion of access, facility enhancements, and improved care, all while maintaining financial discipline.

The approved 0.0805 millage rate is projected to generate approximately $8.3 million in gross tax revenues. These funds are earmarked for statutory governmental obligations, including Broward County's Medicaid Match Program. Memorial clarifies that tax dollars will not fund uncompensated care, which is supported by operating income.
