Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Pro 4Matic+ Debuts as F1 Safety Car in Hungary 2026

The new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Pro 4Matic+ made its official debut as the safety car for the Formula 1 series at the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix. This high-performance vehicle takes over from the previous AMG GT Black Series, which served as the safety car for 51 races between 2022 and 2026.

The safety car's role in F1 races is crucial: it leads the field during safety incidents, such as accidents or adverse weather conditions, ensuring the continuation of the race and the safety of track personnel.

Modifications to the GT 63 Pro 4Matic+ concentrate on its lighting system. Instead of a traditional roof-mounted light bar, LED signal lights are integrated directly into a custom active rear wing and flap assembly. Additionally, adjustable LED flashing lights have been incorporated into the front bumper, headlights, and taillights for enhanced visibility and communication on the track.

Aerodynamics have also been enhanced compared to the civilian version of the AMG GT 63 Pro 4Matic+. The new safety car features a more pronounced front splitter, flics, and an active rear wing to optimize airflow. Underbody panels have also been adjusted to improve air channeling.

The car is powered by a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine producing 604 hp (450 kW). It is equipped with an AMG Speedshift MCT 9-speed transmission and a 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system, making it the first four-wheel-drive safety car in FIA's partnership history. The vehicle sports a special livery for the Hungarian race, including a black paint scheme, red graphic elements, CrowdStrike sponsorship, and anniversary badging.
