Mercedes-Benz is facing a broad recall affecting approximately 200,000 diesel vans equipped with suspected illegal emissions control systems, impacting Sprinter, Vito, and Viano models. The German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) issued the recall order in autumn 2019, but the automotive manufacturer reportedly took two years to develop the necessary software updates.

The issue centers on the "coolant setpoint temperature control," a system previously identified in recalls of tens of thousands of GLK-class vehicles. The German government confirmed in autumn 2019 that this system reduces the exhaust gas recirculation (AGR) rate outside of standard testing conditions (NEFZ cycle), leading to increased nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. According to the KBA, Mercedes-Benz has now developed the approved software update to rectify the situation. Vehicle owners are being urged to bring their vehicles in for the update; failure to comply may result in the vehicle being deregistered.

The recall applies to Euro 5 diesel vehicles featuring the OM 651 engine. Within Germany, around 100,000 Sprinter units and 90,000 Vito and Viano vans are affected. Globally, the recall extends to up to half a million vehicles. KBA data suggests that newer vehicles than previously stated by Mercedes-Benz are also involved. The affected Sprinter models were produced between 2010 and 2018, while the Vito and Viano models were manufactured between 2010 and 2014.
